Tesla Model 3 MOT history & buying checks
By Plateworthy · Updated · Editorial policy
A Model 3 MOT history is useful for recorded mileage and tested roadworthiness items, but it is not a battery-capacity report. Keep the car's history, maintenance evidence, software-dependent features and battery assessment as separate parts of the purchase.

Ask what battery evidence actually exists
Tesla's current UK manual describes a Battery Health evaluation and an optional test, while warning that the feature may not be fitted to every vehicle. Do not assume a seller can produce it for every Model 3, or treat displayed range at one charge level as the same measurement.
Where the feature is available, ask what the result represents, when it was obtained and whether it applies to the car you are viewing. Tesla notes that its optional test can take up to 24 hours and is intended for concerns about energy retention; follow the relevant manual rather than improvising a test during a short viewing.
Electric does not mean maintenance-free
Tesla's maintenance guidance includes brakes, tyres, filters and checks whose applicability depends on use and conditions. Ask for the work history relevant to the car rather than assuming the absence of an engine means nothing needs attention.
Read MOT defect descriptions alongside dated maintenance or repair evidence. A repaired tyre or brake issue should have a supporting explanation where it affects your decision. A later pass records a later inspection; it is not a full workshop service record or a high-voltage battery certification.
Identify the car and its available features
Confirm the actual vehicle, model/version and included equipment with the seller and documents. Software, hardware and region can affect feature availability, so ask for a demonstration of anything on which your purchase depends rather than relying only on a listing's wording.
A clean MOT sequence cannot rule out outstanding finance, an insurance write-off or a theft marker. Use the relevant paid checks for those records, ask separately about charging and battery evidence, and get an appropriate inspection for unresolved condition concerns. Model-wide MOT percentages should be compared only with similar ages and recorded fuels.
Questions to take to the viewing
- Ask for dated battery evidence and understand which feature or test produced it.
- Confirm feature availability on the actual car; do not infer it from a model name.
- Review tyre, brake and maintenance evidence as well as mileage.
- Keep battery condition, present mechanical condition and provenance checks separate.

Legacy aggregate · test period unverified
This older row did not retain its source period, full outcome counts or calculation evidence. Its reported pass rate is 85% across 32,821 test records. It is not a verified version 2 result or a reliability rating. Mileage averages and failure rankings are withheld until a documented reimport.
Why legacy evidence is treated differentlyThese figures may mix generations, engines and usage patterns. They do not establish mechanical reliability or the condition of a particular car. Methods, sources and limits · All research · Download aggregates.
