Keep the car, paperwork and questions together. Tick items on this page or print a copy for each car you view.

Check the MOT and mileage first

Before the viewing

Record the registration, asking price, advertised mileage and seller details; keep a copy of the advert.
Check recorded MOT results, mileage and expiry. Write down unexplained gaps or recurring defects.
Check relevant recalls using the official service and ask what work was completed.
Arrange a daylight viewing, enough time to inspect and, if useful, an independent inspection.

Documents and identity

Inspect the original V5C and compare its details with the vehicle and the seller’s explanation.
Match the physical VIN in accessible locations with the documents and history report. Investigate any mismatch.
Ask for service records and invoices, especially for scheduled major work and any instrument replacement.
For recorded finance or damage, request lender settlement confirmation or dated repair evidence as appropriate.

At the car

Compare the dashboard mileage and units with the latest recorded reading and documentary history.
Look for inconsistent paint, panel alignment, tyre wear, warning lights and evidence relevant to MOT defects.
Try the controls, keys and equipment. Ask about anything that behaves differently from the advert.
Confirm insurance before a test drive. Ask an independent inspector about condition you cannot assess yourself.

Before committing

Resolve adverse or unknown finance, write-off, theft and identity findings; a clear record does not replace inspection.
Verify important claims through independent contact details, not only a seller-provided screenshot or link.
Record the agreed price, vehicle identity, mileage, included items and seller details on a receipt.
Confirm the steps for registration, your own insurance and vehicle tax before using the car on the road.
