Used electric car checks: ask for battery evidence separately
By Plateworthy · Updated · Editorial policy
A vehicle history report can help with recorded finance, write-off, theft and mileage questions. It is not a battery-capacity test. Ask for battery and charging evidence separately, tied to the actual version you are buying.
Confirm the car’s actual specification
Ask for the battery version, charging capabilities, connectors, supplied cables and any separate battery agreement. Confirm the details for this car rather than assuming every example of the same model has the same equipment.
Compare the setup with the journeys and charging arrangements you plan to use. Include the practical cost and availability of charging in your budget before deciding that a low purchase price meets your needs.
Ask what the battery result measures
Request the full battery assessment, the test date and mileage, the method used and its limitations. A displayed estimated range at one charge level is a different observation from a capacity or health assessment.
Check remaining warranty terms, transfer requirements and exclusions using the actual documents. Ask an appropriate specialist what evidence would resolve any concern; do not use a single unverified percentage as a universal pass mark.
Keep ordinary used-car checks in the plan
Review the MOT timeline, service evidence, identity and repair history as well as the electric-specific questions. If historical damage is recorded, give the information to the inspector and ask whether the battery area requires specialist assessment.
Agree which cables, keys and access arrangements are included before collection. Retain the evidence used for the purchase so a later change in a displayed figure can be considered in context.
Common questions
- Does Plateworthy measure battery health?
- No. Its vehicle and MOT history reports do not perform a battery test or promise a battery-health certificate. Request appropriate evidence and assessment separately.
