Buying a car with missing service history
By Plateworthy · Updated · Editorial policy
Missing service paperwork does not tell you whether work happened. It tells you that you cannot yet verify it. Make a list of the maintenance questions that matter for the actual car, then obtain evidence or a clear plan for resolving them.
Find out which records are missing
Separate a lost book, missing invoices and an unexplained period with no evidence. Ask whether the seller can obtain a digital record or copies from the workshops involved, with any permission those workshops require.
Match each document to the vehicle and compare dates and mileage. An invoice for a similar car or an undated stamp should not silently fill a gap.
Compare with the applicable maintenance schedule
Ask a qualified workshop to identify the schedule for the actual engine or electric version, age and use. Distinguish routine maintenance from a specific repair and ask what inspection or work would address the uncertainty.
A later MOT pass does not prove a service item was completed. Avoid turning a generic internet interval into a confirmed requirement for a different version; use the correct guidance.
Compare total cost and residual uncertainty
Obtain a quotation for any work recommended after assessment, and keep that amount separate from the purchase price. Some history may remain unverified even after current maintenance is brought up to date.
Record the seller’s written description of the service history and keep the advert. If the missing evidence is essential to your buying decision, resolve it before a deposit or choose a car with a clearer record.
Common questions
- Can a paid history check reconstruct every missing service?
- No. Plateworthy does not promise a complete service file. Its recorded history and MOT evidence should be used alongside maintenance documents and an independent inspection.
