Outstanding finance: what to verify before paying a seller
By Plateworthy · Updated · Editorial policy
A recorded finance agreement is a reason to pause and verify the position before committing money. A seller’s screenshot, repayment claim or promise to settle after your transfer is not independent confirmation that the agreement is resolved.
Identify the agreement and the unanswered question
Keep the report’s retrieval time and the available agreement type or dates. Ask the seller for current documentation and establish whether the record concerns this vehicle. A report can be incomplete or out of date, so retain uncertainty where confirmation is missing.
Do not assume a monthly payment amount tells you the settlement figure or the seller’s right to sell. Those questions depend on the actual agreement and current position.
Verify through an independently obtained contact route
Ask for a settlement statement and confirm the procedure directly with the finance company through contact details obtained independently. The company may require the agreement holder’s permission before discussing details.
Check the validity date, vehicle identity and any conditions on the statement. Do not follow bank details from an unverified message simply because the message includes the car’s registration.
Agree a verifiable completion plan
Before paying, obtain independent advice on a transaction with unresolved finance and agree what evidence will confirm completion. Keep the settlement and sale documents together, including when and how the position was checked.
If a marker remains after the seller says the agreement is closed, request written confirmation and the correction route. Repeated report purchases should not replace confirmation from the relevant company. Plateworthy does not settle agreements or provide a financial guarantee.
Common questions
- Does an absent finance marker guarantee there is no agreement?
- No. A result depends on the available records and retrieval time. Check identity, sale authority and any contradictory evidence before purchase.
