Car cloning checks: why a clear registration report is not enough
By Plateworthy · Updated · Editorial policy
A history check describes records linked to the identifiers searched. It cannot establish that a physical car is entitled to display those identifiers. That is why checking the car and original documents matters even after a reassuring result.
Compare the advert with the actual car
Before travelling, ask for the registration and basic details, then compare the available records. At the viewing, check that the vehicle, documents and seller’s explanation match what was advertised.
A changed meeting place, missing original documents or unexplained identity differences are reasons to pause and request evidence. They do not by themselves establish a criminal offence.
Inspect identity with the right help
Follow the official used-vehicle checklist for the registration document and VIN. If an identifier is inconsistent, unreadable or appears disturbed, ask an appropriate professional to assess it before you pay.
Do not rely on a screenshot of a report supplied by the seller as your only check. Obtain the record you need yourself, preserve its retrieval date and compare it with the physical vehicle.
Do not let urgency replace the checks
Agree to complete the identity, payment and paperwork checks before a deposit or collection. Keep personal data and document numbers out of public messages while obtaining help.
If you believe a vehicle may be stolen, use the appropriate official reporting route and prioritise your safety. Do not attempt to prove the issue by confronting the seller or proceeding with a payment.
Common questions
- Can a clear theft check rule out cloning?
- No. A registration result cannot certify the identity of the physical car displaying that plate. Compare the VIN, original documents and vehicle, and investigate discrepancies.
